What is Hanson proposing to do?

Since 1963 Hanson (previously Pioneer) has operated an open pit quarry on freehold land, zoned extractive, within the City of Swan. From 1963 to 1998 that quarry was located at Herne Hill. In 1996 clearing commenced for the quarry relocation to the existing Red Hill site. They have currently cleared 80 hectares and are seeking approval to quarry another 140 hectares (350) acres over the next 100 years. (read Hanson proposal document)

What's the problem?

  • " This will remove a large area of skyline on the Darling Scarp. Hanson's were only given approval on the basis that they would quarry "…up to 40 hectares" over the next 100 years. If this approval is granted they will be able to quarry 225 hectares in this period.

  • " The area concerned is bordered by the Darling Range Regional Park, Susannah Brook and Strelley Brook. It would threaten the integrity of both waterways. It would destroy the present wildlife corridor between the John Forrest National Park and the Darling Range Regional Park - an area of great biodiversity.

  • Pioneer had stated in 1991 that: "The hole will only be visible from the air or Pioneer property". This was requirement was confirmed in a written commitment by the then Environment Minister Bob Pearce. However, this is clearly not the case as the quarry is visible locally and from Perth's CBD. (read flyer distributed locally) Their lawyers, Clayton Utz, stated in 2006 that "…there is no commitment by our client (or any other obligation) as to the visibility of the Pioneer operation outside Pioneer property"

  • Furthermore, the original approval for relocation was in fact not related to the Red Hill site but the Herne Hill Quarry. The Redhill Quarry is outside the approved 'footprint' (view a map of the footprints). This was referred to the Corruption and Crime Commission and is currently the subject of a Supreme Court case.

Hanson now requires environmental approval under P IV (Environmental Impact Assessment). Environmental Process can be sighted at the EPA website: www.epa.wa.gov.au. Hanson has engaged Strategen the environmental consultants to assist in coordinating the environmental investigations and public consultation, and to prepare the environmental impact assessment report. The proposal will be the subject of an EPA Public Environmental Review (PER) and public submissions are being sought.

Consultants:

Environmental Consultant - Strategen

Vegetation and Flora Consultant - Mattiske Consulting P/L ( Botanists)

Fauna Consultant - Bamford Consulting Ecologists

Visual Amenity Investigation Consultant - John Cleary Planning

Noise and Vibration Investigation Consultant - SVT Engineering

Aboriginal Heritage Investigation - Wanati Pty Ltd

If this goes ahead a large area of valuable bushland and part of the Perth skyline will be destroyed. Legal obligations have been ignored – can we trust Hanson’s to do the right thing this time?
